Opportunities for the 2020-2021 academic year

IYTF Graduate Student Summer Internship- Office of Immigrant Affairs

The UCLA Center for Study of International Migration (CSIM) and the Immigrant Youth Task Force at UCLA have partnered to offer a paid internship with the Los Angeles County Office of Immigrant Affairs (OIA).

Participants will receive a $2000 stipend for a 10 week internship with the OIA during Summer Quarter 2021. Interns will join OIA teams on existing projects and are expected to work approximately 15 hours per week from June 21-August 27, 2021.

UCLA graduate students from any discipline are encouraged to apply.

Interns should be flexible, independent, and self-motivated. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fellowship will be fulfilled entirely remotely. Interns will need to provide their own equipment: internet (wifi) and laptop/computer.

Examples of potential projects include (but are not limited to):

  • strategy and capacity building for programs that provide legal aid to immigrants, such as the Los Angeles Justice Fund
  • designing and implementing Immigrant Essential Workers programs that utilize community navigators to connect communities to LA County services
  • partnership with the Department of Public Health in strategy, planning, and messaging of delivery of Covid vaccines to immigrant communities
  • partnership with the Department of Social Services to increase impact and access to programs for refugees and asylums

The application is due by Friday 5/14/21 at 5 PM and consists of completing an online application as well as a submission of your CV and a Faculty Letter of Recommendation (preferably from UCLA faculty) via email to mlao@dcba.lacounty.gov. Please limit free response answers to 500 words maximum.

IYTF Undergraduate Student Summer Research Fellowship

The UCLA Center the for Study of International Migration (CSIM) and the Immigrant Youth Task Force at UCLA have partnered to offer a paid fellowship for undergraduate student research related to immigrant youth.

Participants will receive a $1000 stipend to conduct research related to immigrant youth during 6-8 weeks of Summer Quarter 2021. UCLA undergraduate students from any discipline are encouraged to apply.

Steps for application:

Step 1: Seek out a UCLA faculty member conducting relevant research (a sample of possible mentors can be found in our database)

Step 2: The student and the mentor should agree on the student’s role in advancing the research and develop a plan for the fellowship (e.g. a literature review, helping collect data, etc.)

Step 3: Complete the online form summarizing proposed research and the student’s role (please limit responses to 500 words)

Step 4: Emailing student CV and faculty mentor CV to iytf@g.ucla.edu (supervising faculty MUST be CC’ed).

All components of applications are due by Friday 5/14/21 at 5 PM PST. Applicants are encouraged to contact IYTF for feedback on formulating their applications prior to submission.

A final report summarizing the student’s work (and any abstracts, publications, or presentations that have resulted) will be due 2 weeks after the completion of the Summer quarter (minimum one page).
